Bishkek Student Cost of Living: Annual Report 2026

ACLAS Research
Cost of livingBishkekStudent guide

This report estimates what it costs a student to live in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan in 2026, based on crowdsourced cost-of-living data from Numbeo retrieved on 17 October 2026, and compares Bishkek with the region's other two major student destinations, Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Tashkent (Uzbekistan). It expands on the ACLAS article "Cost of Studying in Bishkek in 2026: Tuition and Living Costs Explained" (published 26 September 2026), whose tuition figures and living-cost ranges are reproduced here without alteration.

Executive summary

Bishkek is one of the cheapest capital cities in Central Asia in which to study in English, and the 2026 data confirms that position in detail:

  • A budget student — a shared room outside the city centre, cooking mostly at home, using public transport — spends an estimated USD 386 per month on living costs excluding tuition (roughly USD 4,634 across a twelve-month year).
  • A moderate student — their own one-bedroom apartment outside the centre, a mix of home cooking and eating out — spends an estimated USD 697 per month (roughly USD 8,365 per year).
  • A like-for-like monthly basket (one-bedroom outside the centre, groceries, four inexpensive restaurant meals, transit pass, mobile, broadband and utilities) costs USD 581 in Bishkek, USD 775 in Almaty and USD 588 in Tashkent. Bishkek is therefore about 25% cheaper than Almaty on the same basket, and essentially level with Tashkent (about 1% cheaper).
  • Adding ACLAS's published founding-cohort tuition — USD 2,800 per year for international students, USD 1,800 for Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia residents, reduced to USD 2,100 / USD 1,350 by the 25% Founding Scholars scholarship — an international student on the budget persona pays an all-in total of roughly USD 7,430 per year (about USD 6,730 after the scholarship). A regional student pays roughly USD 6,430 (about USD 5,980 after the scholarship). These totals sit inside the USD 6,400–8,800 range (USD 5,700–8,100 net of scholarship) published in the September 2026 article, using a newer data snapshot.

Every figure below is sourced to a specific dataset retrieved on a specific date. Numbeo data is crowdsourced — it reflects prices entered by contributors, not official statistics — and that limitation is flagged each time such a figure appears.

Methodology

Cost-of-living data

All non-tuition figures come from Numbeo city pages opened on 17 October 2026:

  • Bishkek: numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Bishkek — last update 6 October 2026; 940 price entries in the past 12 months from 99 contributors.
  • Almaty: numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Almaty — last update 15 October 2026; 1,352 entries from 144 contributors.
  • Tashkent: numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Tashkent — last update 15 October 2026; 1,316 entries from 127 contributors.

Numbeo pages display prices in local currency. Figures in this report are shown in local currency and in US dollars. Each Numbeo figure is a crowdsourced mean reported by Numbeo, presented together with the range Numbeo publishes. This report labels every such figure as crowdsourced.

Exchange rates

Conversions use mid-market rates observed on 16 October 2026: 1 USD = 87.45 Kyrgyz som (KGS), 1 USD = 453.25 Kazakhstani tenge (KZT), 1 USD = 11,830 Uzbekistani so'm (UZS). These are market rates for comparison purposes; actual exchange rates available to a student, and the National Bank (NBKR) rate at which ACLAS fees are payable in som, will differ slightly.

Unit conventions

Numbeo lists groceries per pound (lb) for Bishkek and Tashkent, but per kilogram or per 500 g for Almaty (bread 500 g loaf; rice, chicken, beef and cheese per kg). The illustrative groceries basket below therefore uses equivalent quantities in kilograms (1 lb = 0.453592 kg) so the three cities are genuinely comparable. This is stated explicitly in each table note.

Room in a shared apartment

Numbeo does not publish a "room in a shared apartment" line. The budget persona estimates the per-person cost of shared housing as one-third of Numbeo's crowdsourced mean for a three-bedroom apartment outside the city centre (KGS 62,416.67 / 3 ≈ KGS 20,806 ≈ USD 238). This is an estimate derived from the Numbeo figure, not a Numbeo figure itself, and is labelled as such wherever it appears.

Personas

Two illustrative monthly budgets are constructed from the verified line items plus two clearly marked allowances: a USD 30/month (budget) and USD 60/month (moderate) personal-expenses allowance, and a 1.5× scaling of the groceries basket for the moderate persona. Allowances are illustrative, not sourced, and are labelled.

Tuition figures

All tuition figures are taken from the ACLAS article of 26 September 2026 and are not re-verified here: English-taught bachelor band in Kyrgyzstan roughly USD 2,200–4,300 per academic year; ACLAS founding-cohort tuition USD 2,800/year (international) and USD 1,800/year (Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia residents); 25% Founding Scholars scholarship reducing net tuition to USD 2,100 / USD 1,350; a limited number of 50% excellence awards; fees payable in Kyrgyz som at the NBKR rate on the payment date. The ACLAS tuition page is the authoritative source if numbers differ.

What changed since the September article

The article cited Numbeo's July 2026 snapshot (roughly USD 574 for a one-bedroom in the city centre, USD 396 outside). This report uses the October 2026 snapshot, in which those same lines read USD 603 and USD 417 respectively. Crowdsourced figures move between updates; the two snapshots are consistent in structure and do not contradict each other — the article's stated monthly living range of USD 300–500 excluding tuition still contains the budget persona below.

1. Housing

Table 1 — Monthly rent, Bishkek (crowdsourced Numbeo means, page last updated 6 October 2026; retrieved 17 October 2026).

Sources: Numbeo "Cost of Living in Bishkek", last update 6 October 2026; USD conversion at 1 USD = 87.45 KGS (mid-market, 16 October 2026).

Rent is the single largest living expense. The gap between a whole one-bedroom in the centre (USD 603) and a per-person share of a three-bedroom outside the centre (about USD 238) is a factor of 2.5 — housing choice, more than any other line, determines whether a student's budget lands near USD 300 or near USD 700 a month.

A student who cooks at home can cover a month's staple groceries for about USD 57 at these crowdsourced prices — the single most effective lever on the food budget, since four inexpensive restaurant meals a month already add about USD 27.

3. Transport

At about USD 0.23 a ride and USD 11.66 for a monthly pass, public transport is a minor line in any student budget — roughly 3% of the budget persona's monthly total.

The ACLAS tuition page is authoritative if figures differ.

The budget-persona international total (USD 7,434; USD 6,734 net of scholarship) sits inside the USD 6,400–8,800 range — and the net total inside the USD 5,700–8,100 range — published in the September 2026 article, using a newer crowdsourced snapshot.

6. Regional comparison: Bishkek vs Almaty vs Tashkent

Numbeo's dedicated city-comparison page could not be loaded at the time of writing (the service returned a "city not found" error), so the comparison below is built from the three individual city pages, each opened and verified on 17 October 2026. Almaty and Tashkent pages were last updated 15 October 2026 (1,352 entries / 144 contributors and 1,316 entries / 127 contributors respectively); Bishkek's page was last updated 6 October 2026 (940 entries / 99 contributors). All figures are crowdsourced Numbeo means converted at the mid-market rates of 16 October 2026 (1 USD = 87.45 KGS / 453.25 KZT / 11,830 UZS).

Sources: Numbeo city pages for Bishkek (updated 6 Oct 2026), Almaty (updated 15 Oct 2026), Tashkent (updated 15 Oct 2026), all retrieved 17 October 2026. Numbeo's Almaty page lists groceries per kg / 500 g and its Tashkent page per lb; per-item grocery units differ, so groceries are compared as a like-for-like basket below rather than per unit.

Table 9 — Same-basket monthly and annual totals: one-bedroom outside the centre + the Table-3-equivalent groceries basket (4 kg bread, 2 kg rice, 2 kg chicken, 1 kg beef, 2 kg each of apples/bananas/tomatoes, 4 kg potatoes, 2 kg onions, 8 L milk, 24 eggs, 2 lettuces, 0.5 kg cheese, 4 bottled waters) + 4 inexpensive restaurant meals + monthly transit pass + mobile plan + broadband + basic utilities. All prices are the crowdsourced Numbeo means from the same three pages.

Annual basket total (USD)6,9729,2957,062

Method: sum of the crowdsourced Numbeo means for the listed items in local currency, converted at 16 October 2026 mid-market rates. Grocery quantities are identical in metric terms across the three cities.

The comparison reads clearly: Bishkek is about 25% cheaper than Almaty on the same basket, and Tashkent is about 24% cheaper than Almaty — while Bishkek and Tashkent are effectively level (Bishkek about 1% cheaper, well within crowdsourced noise). The Almaty premium is broad-based: rent, restaurant meals, the transit pass, utilities and the mobile plan are all 25–90% higher there than in Bishkek.

Key findings

  1. Bishkek's all-in annual cost for an international student is roughly USD 6,700–7,400 on a budget lifestyle, using October 2026 crowdsourced prices plus ACLAS's published founding-cohort tuition (USD 6,734 with the 25% Founding Scholars scholarship applied to the budget persona; USD 7,434 at the published USD 2,800 tuition). Regional students (Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia) land at roughly USD 6,000–6,400 all-in.
  2. Bishkek is about 25% cheaper than Almaty on a like-for-like monthly basket (USD 581 vs USD 775), with the gap driven by rent, eating out, utilities and mobile costs. It is effectively at parity with Tashkent (about 1% cheaper), making the two the region's budget tier.
  3. Housing choice dominates the student budget. A per-person share of a three-bedroom outside the centre costs an estimated USD 238/month — less than half the USD 603 for a one-bedroom in the centre. No other line item moves the monthly total as much.
  4. Day-to-day costs are among the region's lowest. At these crowdsourced prices a bus or marshrutka ride is about USD 0.23, a monthly pass USD 11.66, an inexpensive restaurant meal USD 6.86, and a mobile plan with 10 GB+ of data USD 5.76 — each the lowest or joint-lowest of the three capitals.
  5. Cooking at home is the highest-leverage habit after sharing housing. The illustrative staple groceries basket costs about USD 57/month at crowdsourced prices; four inexpensive restaurant meals already add about USD 27.
  6. The September 2026 article's headline range still holds. Its published range of USD 300–500/month living costs excluding tuition contains the budget persona (USD 386), and its published annual totals of USD 6,400–8,800 (USD 5,700–8,100 net of scholarship) contain the budget-persona totals in Table 7 — on a newer crowdsourced snapshot.

Limitations

  1. Crowdsourced data. Every Numbeo figure in this report is a mean of prices entered by self-selected contributors (99 for Bishkek, 144 for Almaty, 127 for Tashkent over the past 12 months). Contributors skew toward expatriates and urban professionals; student-specific spending (dormitories, canteens, second-hand markets) is under-represented. Numbeo is not an official statistical source, and entries can be stale, mis-entered, or manipulated.
  2. Single-snapshot comparison. The Bishkek page was last updated 6 October 2026 while the Almaty and Tashkent pages were last updated 15 October 2026. Small timing differences add noise to the comparison, particularly given point 3.
  3. Exchange-rate movement. All USD conversions use 16 October 2026 mid-market rates. The Kyrgyz som, Kazakhstani tenge and Uzbekistani so'm all float; a student converting savings or paying fees in som at the NBKR rate on the payment date will face slightly different dollar figures. Re-run the conversion before quoting USD totals.
  4. Lifestyle variance. The personas are illustrative. Actual spending varies with neighbourhood, diet, travel home, health insurance, visa and residence-permit fees, study materials, and personal habits — none of which are in the Numbeo basket. The moderate persona (USD 697/month) deliberately sits above the article's typical USD 300–500 range, which describes shared-housing students.
  5. Derived estimates are not Numbeo data. The per-person shared-room figure (3BR ÷ 3), the per-person utilities share, the personal-expense allowances and the 1.5× groceries scaling are this report's constructions, labelled as such. They are reasonable but not measured.
  6. Tuition figures are reproduced, not verified. The tuition band (USD 2,200–4,300/year), ACLAS founding-cohort tuition (USD 2,800 / USD 1,800), the 25% Founding Scholars scholarship (net USD 2,100 / USD 1,350) and the 50% excellence awards are taken from the ACLAS article of 26 September 2026. Tuition is set by the institution; the ACLAS tuition page is authoritative.
  7. No claims are made here about any institution's accreditation or recognition status. This report covers costs only.
